An Uneven Divide

(They Battle for Sobriety)

As the world suffers through a Pandemic and a global shutdown many are battling with sobriety. With meetings being held online not everyone has access or the technology to attend the meetings that may be what is keeping them clean.

There is help through online groups, and meetings, but the fact is not everyone has access to the technology needed for that, so some of the most vulnerable are being left behind.

If someone in recovery does have access to the necessary technology to connect with groups or meetings they are encouraged to utilize FaceTime or Skype as an alternative to texting or simple calls because it is better that they are able to see who they are talking to.

Those battling the recovery from addictions are encouraged to keep moving and to try something new. Starting a project such as a Garden is a great way to do that.

Just today a neighbor overdosed, and I’ve seen others holding on to their sobriety by a thin thread, thankfully there is help out there. The problem is there is not always equal access to the technology needed to attend these virtual groups.

To be fair, I am no expert on alcoholism or addiction, thankfully I have never felt the need to drink, or numb my pain with drugs, but I’ve had friends and loved ones who have battled with addictions, and I’ve seen their struggle.

The fear that a friend who once battled addiction will fall off the wagon, as the stress of this lockdown manifests is a very real worry.
