Chapter Five:

The moments following the crash were coming back to me in bits and pieces. My mind flashed back to the other driver swerving all over the road, obviously under the influence, trying to avoid going off the cliff just a few hundred yards away or wrapping around the old oak. That cliff was easily a five hundred foot drop, something I wouldn’t have survived.

They weren’t pleasant, but they were a sign that I was healing. What happened to me was no longer being hidden by my subconscious. It was good and bad, because I had to deal with the emotions I must have felt before I lost consciousness. Even though it was hard, I was grateful to be alive, though I definitely had my moments of frustration and cried out to God. But I had my parents and sister to support me, which was a lot more than some did.

“You’re going home someday soon, Aria, it won’t be easy at first but you’ll be fine. I’m confident.”

“I know Mom, but I’m nervous. What if I’m not as strong as everyone thinks.”

“Aria, don’t underestimate yourself. You’re a lot stronger than you think.”

I wanted to believe my Mom, I wanted to believe I could handle it. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, I was supposed to be worrying about Junior Prom, not life with a spinal cord injury.
