Chapter Two:

From her expression, I could tell the news, whatever it was, wasn’t good. My mother pulled up a chair next to my bed. Although she didn’t want to tell me how bad the accident was, she knew I needed to know. I could tell my sister was upset too, she knew more than I did, and whatever it was, it upset her.

“Check on Alyssa.” I said softly. “I’ll wait.”

“She’s with Dad.”

“Take it from me, she needs you too.”

Mother nodded and checked on Alyssa. I didn’t want my little sister to feel like her feelings, her pain, didn’t matter because I was in the hospital.

I was left with my thoughts and questions for a few moments. I knew I needed the answers, but I was also scared.

Soon after, my family walked back into the room, followed by a doctor, a young woman who didn’t seem ten years older than me, but she seemed incredibly competent and compassionate.

You’re going to be okay, Aria.” Mother said before the doctor could say anything. Whatever the news was, it wasn’t good, the look on my parents’ and sisters’ faces, the way Alyssa climbed up on my bed and laid her head on my shoulder. The two of us were close, she loved me, and I loved her. Alyssa was old enough now to figure out something wasn’t right.
