Because We Were Friends
I knew even
Then you did
Not sit idly by
As a bully
Teased and tormented
A friend
You stood up
When others could
Not stand up
For themselves
Days, and weeks
Months of bullying
Pushing my friend
To the ground
Simply because she was
Different
Because she didn't
Talk above a whisper
Or walk that well,
Simply because they could.
Even at eight, or maybe I was nine
By then
I knew you didn't
Stand idly buy
Watching someone bully
Your friend
Simply because they could.
I was never a fighter
But in that moment
As they pushed my friend
To the ground
I had enough
I felt my fists balling
