Bones: Was An Opportunity Missed?
It’s no secret that the creator of the Bones TV Show based Temperance Brennans Character on a friend with Asperger’s Syndrome, but that fact was never explored in the series. Scenes like the one I shared above from the first season, episode 1×22 shows us that vulnerability, the discomfort and the pain, yes she experienced great loss, and that could have something to do with the way she acts, but it’s deeper than that, her discomfort in group settings her seemingly cold and aloof attitude at times show the characteristics of what is likely Aspergers.
As the show progresses we watch the character grow, including Doctor Brennan, but she still struggles in very obvious ways, with relationships, with friendships and with the grief of what happened to her as a child.
I’ve watched Bones countless times, always getting something new out of it, able to watch it with new eyes, but I always question why the fact that Dr Brennan likely had Aspergers Syndrome was never addressed, it would have been nice to see Aspergers represented because I believe many may have been able to relate to Temperance Brennan on an evil deeper level!
