Chapter Eleven:



I sat in Nadia’s hospital room, looking at my best friend. She was coming back to us, it felt slow but the doctors said she was actually making good progress. I had to admit she was making progress but what I longed for was for her to come back to classes with me, it would make it easier having my best friend by my side.



“Go home?” Nadia asked, and I knew she was asking me if it was time for her to come home.”



“Tomorrow, after I get back from classes?”



“School?” She asked, looking sad.



“Someday soon, you’ll get to go back.” I tried to reassure her, but honestly I was not sure that this was a promise I could keep.”



I wheeled myself to Nadia’s bedside, where she was sitting on the edge of the bed, legs swinging back and forth.



“Hurt?” She asked.



“My legs don’t work, I can’t walk.”



“Can’t think.” She said sadly.



“Nadia you are getting better everyday.” I said.



She shook her head adamantly. I knew she was frustrated that she knew she had a different life, and I knew despite the brain injury she was in there somewhere struggling to get out.

“Friends?” She asked.



“Best friends.” I assured her.



“Don’t have to be.”



“Nadia, you are my best friend, that isn’t going to change.”



“Not the same.”



“We’ve both changed Nadia, but deep inside we are still the same. “



“What happened?” Nadia asked.



“We were in an accident.” I explained, not…
