Chapter Three:

Friday, September,07,2018

I open my eyes. The first thing Mother does when she realizes I’m awake is gently brush back my hair.

Remembering my best friend’s blood-dripping head, I panic.

“Nadia?” I asked.

“She’s here.” Mom said softly. A basin is grabbed and mom explains the anesthesia is making me sick. Tears flow, tears I cannot fight back.

“You’ll be fine.” Mom says reassuringly, but I know it’s not just me who worries.

Later

“Hi, sleeping beauty.” Mom says with a smile that reminds me of Bobe.

“How do you feel?”

“I feel better.” My voice barely broke the whisper. “But I’m thirsty.”

“I’ll get you a 7up, but take small sips.”

“Thank you.”

As I saw my mother’s exhaustion written on her face, I felt guilty. Seeing her like that made me feel guilty.

“You’re welcome.” My mom said.

In search of answers, I pushed the drink away.

“How bad is it?” I asked.
