Chapter Twelve:

Saturday.December.31.1938

The last time I wrote in these pages, we were celebrating Hanukkah and having a good time, we were happy, but today’s entry is not like that. The day we have dreaded has come, leaving us with much confusion and pain. The Nazi’s have come to take Father away, we do not where, they just say it is a work camp, and I want to believe that, because the other options are to painful to think about.

We hear whispers about what happens in those camps, I want to believe they are mirror rumors, but deep down I know they are not, there are to many of these stories for them to be made up, but I try to be strong. Father is a strong man, perhaps he has a chance. But what is strength when the others have weapons and he does not?

I need to be strong, my childhood ended when the Nazi’s marched my Father away this morning. I am ten, but I may as well be a hundred. I must be strong for Mom, for Naomi, I made that promise to Abba, and I am going to do everything in my power to keep that promise. I cannot have Abba worrying about us, when he must fight for his survival. He needs to focus on getting out of there, making it until we are freed, but when will that be?
