Chapter Six:

November,25,1938:

We could hear heavy footsteps approaching. Just two weeks prior, the Nazi soldiers had taken everything we owned. As Mother opened the door, they broke it down, pushing her away.

The two of us remained calm, though I was shaking on the inside, fearing that our father would be taken once again. Naomi too remained calm.

I was not about to allow these frightening looking men to see me as frightened. By allowing them to see my pain, I will not bring them joy. As a result, I try to remain calm as much as possible and pray to God that they do not hear my heartbeat.

After they left, I noticed that Mother and Father had also shown courage. There was a sense of fear in their voices. That scared me, because Mother and Father are brave, but it has been difficult to watch their friends disappear into the ghettos and concentration camps. There were even some who were killed on the streets. Some Nazis did not care who they killed.

It is also important for me to hide my fear from Naomi, as I do not want her to become afraid as well. Naomi must remain as strong as possible, but she is aware that something is wrong. As I do, she is able to hear the whispers.
