Broken Beginnings: Chapter Twenty Four (Rewritten)

Chapter Twenty Four:

January 1942:

It’s bitterly cold here, and we do not have enough to heat this place, this place that can never be home, it is not fit for animals yet we are forced to live here, little heat, little food, no luxuries. I cuddle with Elizabeth for warmth.

We used to like the winter, the snow fall, building snowmen, making snow angels, snow ball fights, but there is none of that here, because here snow has become something bad, something that freezes us. Some families have died from the cold and hunger, that is the way he wants it though, that monster named Hitler. How can one man hold such power, hold such hate that he makes others hate along with them?

I know Elizabeth longs to play outside, just as we had before, she misses the carefree days, and though she only has the mind of a little child, she too has become solemn, a sadness, a despair falls over this place. I do my best to cheer Elizabeth us, by making up stories, stories of far away places, of fairies, of happily ever after, a place where one is free to be a child. She likes these stories and honestly that makes me happy, so I am happy to tell these stories. I have written some down, perhaps someday I will write books for Children, someday when Children are free to be children again.
