Broken Beginnings-Prologue-Chapter Two
Prologue:
November,10,1938
There is shattered glass everywhere. The world turned upside down when we were slumbering; fragments of shattered glass covered the roads. Synagogues, physicians, watchmakers, and a wide range of businesses were destroyed. Our houses of worship are the most important targets for the Nazis.
Naomi slept through all the chaos, the bursting glass, and the cries of Rabbis and business owners. She sleeps like a baby.
The men were sent to work camps.
Father has left the house. He is working on getting tickets for us to evacuate Poland. It would not be prudent for us to remain here any longer. It is imperative that we go for our freedom, especially Naomi’s. There are considerable risks associated with our lives because we are Jews, because Naomi is special, and as a result, we are almost nine years old, despite the fact that something went wrong when Naomi was born, and so now Naomi always maintains the mental capacity of a four-year-old. My mother says having a twin like Naomi has required me to mature before my time, but I would not trade it for anything. Naomi is very special to me.
Seeing the ruin through the window, mother has tears in her eyes. There is a sense of melancholy in the air. Normally, Mother does not weep, but now…
