Chapter Three:

Friday, September,07,2018

My eyes flutter open. I feel Mother’s gentle hand brushing back hairs stuck to my forehead when she realizes I’m away.

I panic, remembering my best friend, the blood dripping from her head.

“Nadia?” I asked.

“She’s here too.” Mom said, gently grabbing a basin, the anesthesia is making me sick Mom explains, as the tears flow, tears I have no strength to fight back.

“You are going to be okay.” Mom says reassuringly, but I’m sure she knows it’s not just me I am worried about.

Later

“Hi, sleeping beauty.” Mom says, wearing the smile that reminds me so much of Bobe.

“How are you feeling?”

“I feel better.” I said, my voice not much more than a whisper. “But I’m thirsty.”

“I’ll have them bring you a 7up, but take small sips.”

“Thank you.”

I felt a tinge of guilt, seeing the exhaustion written on my Mother’s face. I hated to see her that way; it made me feel guilty.

“You’re welcome.” Mom said, kissing me on the forehead.
