“I’m afraid.” Celine swallowed, the moonlight casting shadows, but it wasn’t the darkness she feared.

As I touched Celine’s shoulder, I realized that she needed me more than she ever had before.

“Everything has changed.” She sighed gently squeezing my hand.

The week before, her world had changed, and I had driven to the hospital in a daze after an accident. As a result, I had to make decisions I was afraid would make Celine resent me forever.

At that moment, I needed to be Celine’s voice in making a decision.

She sat in a wheelchair, looking small, almost fragile. An accident, a decision, and my sister’s life had been changed, our lives had been changed.

“You can’t keep beating yourself up, you made the right decision. “I don’t blame you for anything.” She squeezed my hand, reassuring me when I should have been reassuring her.

Despite my best efforts, I was hard pressed not to blame myself. Celine and I were not responsible for the accident. Since it was an accident, no one was at fault. It didn’t stop the pain, but it did ease it a little.

I watched the moon cast shadows as I waited for the nurse to assist Celine into the front passenger seat.
