How The Heroes In my Life Had an Impact

I’ve had heroes in my life, those who have persevered against all odds. One of my first heroes was my Nonna, who had survived great loss, who at a very young age had to watch her first love die. I can’t even begin to imagine the impact that had on her life, or perhaps I can. I saw the pain in her eyes, on the rare occasions when she would talk about him. And I saw how my Grandfather’s death had affected her when I wasn’t quite nine, still she persevered, she lived her life. She kept herself busy, and she did that up until the end. She was alive when I released my first collection of poetry, we danced around the living room that day. Life was for celebrating in that moment of course there were times of grief too.

About a year after my Grandfather a World War 2 Veteran passed away, Bette Middler released her iconic song, Wind Beneath My Wings, a song that became an anthem of sorts to the heroes in my life.

Nonna was a small woman, not even five feet but in our eyes she was a giant. The one that kept us together when times were tough. My Grandfather and Maternal Grandmother were remarkable to but I was only eight when my Grandfather died…
