I Knew You

My Grandmother (Nonna) is on the right, with the white, with one of her sisters…

I knew you

When your hair

Was dotted with gray

And arthritic hands

Wrote out recipes.

I knew you

When your grandchildren

Laughter filled the room

Bringing joy and life.

I knew you

When you experienced grief

The loss of loved ones

Carried a wait with you

Especially the loss of your

Husband in “86"

I knew you

When Christmas Eve’s were

Magical full of Biscotti’s we

Spent hours making

And the smell of pasta sauce

Simmering filled the air.

I knew you

When age did not

Betray the youth

In your eyes

And your thirst for

Knowledge

Never dimmed.

I knew you

In those last moments

As time slipped away

To the sound of me

Tearfully reading

Psalm 23.

I knew you…

I lost my Grandmother weeks before my 26 birthday, it’s been 18 years but she’s still so much a part of my life.
