Below him was the abyss, a voracious black hole. Above him were the sharp, vertical rows of rocks. John wasn’t moving. Not because he didn’t want to, but because his hands were sweating so profusely that they slipped on the rock. His rubbery legs wobbled on the natural steps carved into the mountainside. There was no safe place for him other than this rocky alcove, where he was curled up like a fetus.
