Chapter Fourteen:

I was tired of being told what I couldn’t do. It was tiring being told that I could not teach because I had been injured. Despite being injured, I did not regret protecting the kids. Nevertheless, I regret the way others treated me as if I were disposable, believing because I was disabled now, I was unworthy of being a teacher.

“Elaina, if this is what you want, we’ll fight for it.”. There is no changing the fact that you are a good teacher.”

It’s a struggle sometimes, Andrea.”

“Elaina, it is if that’s what you want, and remember that you are not only doing this for yourself, but also for others.”

I nodded. It was impossible for me to argue with Andrea because I knew she was right. I did not only want to help myself but others. It was sad that twenty plus years into the twenty first century, people still could not look beyond physical differences. People far to often only saw the disability and not the person.

I had not realized what others had gone through until I found myself in their shoes. It wasn’t that I had treated others differently because they were disabled, but I hadn’t realized how many people had.

My legs, my arms did not function properly but my mind was still sharp. I could still think and I could still…
