It May Seem Small
Lessons from the Food Pantry
“Money is not the only commodity that is fun to give. We can give time, we can give our expertise, we can give our love, or simply give a smile. What does that cost? The point is, none of us can ever run out of something worthwhile to give.
Steve Goodier
There may seem to be nothing special about a tote full of onions, a bag full of greens, a box full of meat, but working at a food pantry, you realize that fresh produce and meat are among the most sought after foods. The majority of people desire foods that can be used to prepare healthy meals and feed their families.
Families are struggling in ways they have never struggled before, and 99 percent of them are grateful for the services we provide, which makes us feel like what we are doing is worthwhile.
“The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.
Helen Keller
On days when the food is not plentiful or our clients are few, we still have something to offer, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, and the stories we hear, some heartbreaking, others unbelievable, but it is not our job to decide for them. While we do not live their lives or know their stories, we can give them a little compassion and love them as Jesus would.
