Grief Isn’t One Thing It’s Many

Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart.

José N. Harris, MI VIDA: A Story of Faith, Hope and Love

In spite of the fact that I still have their phone numbers in my phone, whenever I view my contact list, I am reminded of their passing. As one of these numbers was a friend I knew for many years and the other passed away just over a year ago, it has a special place in my heart, and whenever I see these numbers it takes my breath away for a moment.

We all experience grief, and we all cope with it in different ways. Therefore, we are unable to judge another person’s grief since it is influenced by a variety of factors. Grief, despite popular belief, does not have a time limit. We can grieve someone we lost years ago, the grief can creep up on us at any time.

The worst type of crying wasn’t the kind everyone could see — the wailing on street corners, the tearing at clothes. No, the worst kind happened when your soul wept and no matter what you did, there was no way to comfort it. A section withered and became a scar on the part of your soul that survived. For people like me and Echo, our souls contained more scar tissue than life.
