Its always fascinated me how long the Byzantine empire lasted!

Yet, this is only half the truth, as, in reality, it was “only” the western Roman Empire that fell in 476, and its eastern counterpart went on to live for nearly another millennia, finally succumbing to its end in 1453, only a few decades before Columbus arrived to America.
Why did the Eastern Roman Empire outlive the West?
