Life with a Disability
People with or without disabilities have their limitations, things we strive for, and things we struggle with. Those with disabilities also have to contend with the fact that they have to work twice as hard to accomplish tasks.
Living with a disability myself, I understand the struggle. Others have accused me of being lazy when the reality was that a task that may seem easy to them may in-fact cause me a lot of spoons.
So what on earth are spoons Michelle, you may ask. Well let me break it down to you with the Spoon Theory:
The spoon theory was developed by Christine Miserandino (Writer) in 2003 to demonstrate how having lupus affects her daily life.
People with chronic pain start each day with proverbial spoons, representing the amount of mental and physical energy it takes to complete a daily task. Showering or getting dressed may cost one spoon, while cooking or vacuuming may take three or four spoons. Smaller tasks may require multiple spoons on days with increased pain.
