Life Can Change…It’s Time Our Narrative Did Too
Anyone of us can face disability at anytime.
Anyone of us can face a life altering disability at anytime. Children and adults alike can face a disability at anytime, a dive in the water at the wrong angle, a back bend at a slightly wrong angle, an accident an illness. Even with that knowledge, there’s still an outdated narrative that goes with disabilities a narrative that often passes on to society at large.
1:) Those with disabilities cannot have fulfilling lives.
2:) Those with disabilities who are unable to work due to the nature of their disability deserve to live on amount that equates to far less than minimum wage.
3:) Those with disabilities cannot advocate for their own health care, and often when they do voice their needs they are talked down too or totally dismissed. This of course isn’t true for all doctors but I’ve seen it happen off enough to know that this is a real issue.
4:) Those with disabilities don’t deserve a quality education, and if the person happens to be mute or have verbal delays they are often labeled as incapable of learning. Often those who cannot speak, or have delayed speech are in fact very, they just need to be given the tools to voice their knowledge.
