Anna-leis could spend hours watching Sasha and Sonya play, that special bond she should have had with her sister, but was not allowed to, because her parents wanted to alienate her. Although she wouldn’t understand why they did what they did, she was giving her daughters a better childhood than she had.

It didn’t stop her from fearing she would end up like her parents, even though she was doing everything they hadn’t done for her. Clarence always reminded her that she was not like her parents.

“Anna-leis, you’re not your parents, and you never will be.” Clarence reassured her. “You make sure the girls are happy, healthy, and most importantly, loved.”

Clarence was right, but that didn’t stop her from worrying. Although she didn’t like to get angry for fear of flying off the top, there were things that made her angry, such as parents hurting their children, and injustice in general. Her motivation for becoming a cop was to protect others the way she had not been protected as a child. Even though her parents neglected her physically, what they did in many ways was far worse than what they did physically.
