There was something about being with Clarence, that made Anna-leis forget, even if briefly, all that she had been through, or at the very least made it more tolerable. Clarence made her believe she was beautiful, even when she felt ugly. But she was anything, but ugly, his job was to make her see that, and to help her face the world. Without Clarence she would have stayed hidden away, afraid to face society, because she felt broken, she didn’t even need to tell him that though, not in words, he knew how she felt, and he’d do anything for her to be able to look at herself through his eyes.

He would grab her hand, look at her with a look that melted her. “Anna-leis, you aren’t broken, you are beautiful, on the outside and on the inside.”

She would inevitably look down at her lap, a light blanket usually covering, trying to see what he saw. But another persons stupid decision had scarred her for life, taking with it her legs. She knew even when she mastered the prosthetics, the reality would be there, a drunk driver had destroyed her life, her career. She would never again be a cop, she grieved for that more than she grieved for her legs.

“I feel pretty broken.” She said softly, nursing a cup of coffee. They had gone to a small cafe for lunch, Clarence knowing that even this was a big deal. She was still so fragile even…
