“I can’t believe this is my life.” whispered Anna-leis. She was lying next to Clarence, and breathing in the wonderful scents of Old Spice Cologne, and the Bolognese sauce they had spent all day preparing.

Smells can evoke such strong emotions.

“You deserve this, and so much more.” Clarence hugged her tightly. Even the feel of his skin evoked a powerful emotion, one she couldn’t quite describe.

Annaleis nodded, trying to believe him, but it’s hard when you’re told all your life you’re not worth anything. Listening to that for years severely damaged her self-esteem. First and foremost, the Lord and her family helped her feel better about herself.

As Clarence thought about Anna-leis’ parents, how they had completely ignored her when she called to say she had nearly lost her life, and had lost both legs, he was enraged.

How could Anna-leis’ parents treat their own child like that? Clarence asked himself that question over and over, but there were no answers.

Although there were times they got angry with each other, Clarence did his best to be gentle, even when he was angry, because he saw the fear when he raised his voice to her. Her mask had worked with others, but not with Clarence. He had gotten to know her beyond physical…
