Anna-leis often got lost in Clarence’s eyes, just as he did here. Love and compassion were evident in his eyes, as well as understanding, sympathy, and empathy. She saw love and hope most clearly in his eyes.

She looked into those eyes when the doctors told her that she had lost both legs above the knee. She’d somehow been assured it would be okay by those eyes and by the proposal she’d received by her hospital bed, an awkward, yet perfectly timed, proposal. There wasn’t any pity in his eyes, just pain, no pity.

Anna-leis had never really thought about how eyes communicate until she saw Clarence’s eyes and understood what they meant. Sometimes his eyes, or a certain expression, spoke louder than words.

When Anna-leis talked about the scars her parents had caused her as a child, she could see a flash of anger in his eyes, something she only saw when he was reporting on a story when someone hurt a child. Thank God he had a good childhood, a loving mother and father who loved him, the girls, and her. There are now girls in the family she always dreamed of.

Her scars would always be there, but they wouldn’t be as noticeable, and she would be able to live with them better. Clarence had taught her to understand her emotions as well as others’, and he had and was helping…
