The girls became more confident and happy as they grew into their own in a matter of weeks, and Anna-leis loved watching them explore. Sasha and Sonya had grown beyond their shyness and timidity when they first came to live with their family; they were bubbly, happy girls who brightened the lives of Anna-leis and Clarence.

She wished she could give her little girls piggyback rides, teach them to ride a bike, or skate with them. In spite of all the things she couldn’t teach them, she could teach them far more. She would never be able to give the girls everything they needed if she dwelled on what she couldn’t do. They didn’t mind that Anna-leis couldn’t give them piggyback rides; what mattered was that she tucked them into bed every night, read them a story, and prayed with them.

Clarence helped the girls with things Anna-leis couldn’t, such as riding a bike and piggyback rides. Sometimes they wanted her to ride with them, but they didn’t tell her, knowing it made her sad, most of the time their Mom was happy, sometimes even silly, but sometimes the things she couldn’t do made her sad, even though it wasn’t her fault, so they tried not to make her too sad. While Mom and Dad said it was okay to ask questions about Mom’s legs, they really did not want to make her sad.
