*Wrote this a few years ago, one summer while caring for my younger niece….

Prologue:

The car came out of nowhere leaving me little time to react. Suddenly it was there, coming at me, intentionally running me off the road. Even with my hands gripping the steering wheel and my feet on the breaks, I could not stop in time. A second later my little red sedan was wrapped around a tree, and I was drifting in and out of consciousness only marginally aware of what was happening around me.

I closed my eyes and saw Kayla’s faith, my mirror image, my twin sister and one of the main reasons I knew I could not go out like this.

I taught Creative Writing to Middle Schoolers, and wrote books for Young Adults. Inspirational stories, nothing that would make me a target? At least not that I thought of.

Kayla worked in Sales, but neither of us were doing anything that would leave us a target, yet here I was, drifting in and out of consciousness, praying that I would live.

Strangely I did not feel the kind of pain I thought I should, not the way I hit that tree. It seemed like an eternity before I heard sirens in the distance, someone had called for help, someone I probably owed my life too.
