More the Same

Years before Facebook, Twitter, Medium, I used other platforms to give s voice to the voiceless. Is this my best poem, I dont think it is by far but it was a way of expressing myself. While a Senior in Highschool 1995-1996, I had several life changing experiences one was working as an aide in a Special Education room for the severe handicap, some of the kids were verbal, some were not, and in their own way they taught me the most powerful lessons.

Not Different More the Same

A disabled child is first a child…

I feel what you feel

Laughter and tears

I experience them all.
My disability does not stop me
From knowing what’s going on around me
I hear the laughter,
See the way people back away from me
I am only a kid
A kid who wants to make friends,

Can’t you understand that?
My legs may not work like yours
My learning may be slower
My sight may be little or maybe I can’t see at all
But that does not stop me
From understanding
Why I don’t have friends come over
