Oh Chrismon Tree
Symbols and Meanings
The image above is of the Chrismon Tree in our Sanctuaty, so what exactly is a Chrismon Tree, some of you may ask what is a Christmon tree, well let me do my best to explain it to my readers that may or may not already know:
During Advent and Christmas, churches often display Chrismon trees decorated with Christian symbols, or Chrismons. “Chrismon” is a combination of the words “Christ” and “monogram”.
Frances Kipps Spencer created the first Chrismon tree in 1957 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. Spencer wanted to create an alternative to the brightly colored Christmas ornaments she thought were inappropriate in a worship setting. Since then, other Christian denominations have adopted the practice, including Anglicans, Catholics, Methodists, and Reformed.
There are several star Chrismons, each with its own meaning. From the five-pointed star to the eight-pointed Natal Star Cross, the former symbolizing Jesus’ five wounds, the latter representing Bethlehem star and the four gospels of the New Testament.
The Triangle Symbolizes the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
