I languished in a valley of invisibility, 
worked harder, better, smarter 
in darkness of passivity, 
unseen in the umbra of 
braggarts and blatherskites, 
unheard, unappreciated — but
always dependable, constantly constant, 
steady, trustworthy, faithful — 
the mongrel fed scraps on the porch 
while poodles dined at the table.
