Redefining Disabilities: Mandy Harvey
From the time I began writing way back in Highschool I knew that I was meant to share stories about those who in one way or another have overcome obstacles to redefine what it means to have a disability, and to remind the world, it isn’t one thing it’s many and on that end, I’d like to spotlight those in the public eye who happen to have a disability and who better to start off with then Mandy Harvey.
Amanda, (Mandy) Lynn Harvey was born on January.02.1988, she became profoundly deaf after an illness at the age of eighteen and for a time she nearly gave up on her dreams of becoming a professional singer, but during the twelfth season of America’s Got Talent she wowed the judges and audience alike by performing an original song called Try.
I love stories like this, stories of people who redefine the obstacles they face, and show the world that disability isn’t one thing, it’s many.
Mandy Harvey talks openly about how things fall out of control, how she left music after loosing her hearing, and in time found her way back.
If you’re looking for a reminder of what it means to overcome, I would definitely look to Mandy Harvey, a deaf singer who proved to the world that she could.
