Shadows that Lurk in Light

Prologue:

Deliah’s heavy footsteps filled the room as she entered. The expression on her face indicated that the news was not good. For the last two years, the sound of the phone ringing has either brought terror or joy, and nothing in between.

The past couple of years have taught us all many hard lessons, the most important being that shadows are often lurking in the light. When I went to the grocery store in the middle of a world-wide pandemic, I nearly died, not because I got sick, but because a crazed monster shot me in the parking lot, watching me die, or so he thought, as I was very much alive, but not uninjured.

“He has been released.” This caused Delilah to sigh. “As a result of a technicality.”

I became quiet, unable to make sense of what I was hearing. He had tried to kill me, shot me, and left me to die. However, I was alive, he had not known that until I was in the hospital, my life had forever changed, but I had survived.

The reality of what had happened hit me hard. The man who had attempted to kill me, this stranger who already knew my face, was out of prison, free to attempt to murder me again, this was so unfair.

“Tracey, it will all be okay.” Delilah tried to reassure me, but I lived with what that person had done to me. I always would. “If necessary…
