Grief Comes in its Own Time

Chapter Forty Eight:

When the answering machine picked up the phone late one night, I heard the eerie yet familiar voice on the other end, but I failed to engage this monster because I was not about to give him that satisfaction. In spite of his attempts to reach me, I refused to play into his games.

“One day, I’ll get out and find you and your sister and finish what I started!”

By now I almost found his voice comical, because I was reminded of B-rated movies from my childhood.

“He’s not going to give up!”. Deliah said, sounding frustrated, that he shouldn’t be able to reach us the way he did, when he was behind bars. He was increasingly aware that someone who worked in prison was helping him.

“No, he isn’t, he gets sick pleasure from this cat-and-mouse game.”

There was no doubt my mind mind that the man was sick all around, for anyone who could kill two dozen people and throw them away like trash was a very sick and twisted individual.

“I hope he never gets out, after all he had taken from us.”

“He cannot hide from God, he will be held accountable for his crimes.” I reminded Deliah, but in truth I often asked myself that…
