Chapter Forty-Four:

Some days were easier than others, the sshadows didn’t seem so menacing, but there were days when I felt as if we were being hunted by a madman, a madman who was locked up in a maximum security prison, however, I was sure that some of the guards in that prison were crooked and willing to help. It was Jesus and my sister who helped me through the difficult times, especially the time in the hospital when I realized the extent of my injuries. Although she couldn’t be there physically, she was with me through the screen of an iPhone 11.

My independence was due to Delilah, because she reminded me daily that there were more things I could accomplish than I couldn’t, but on the days I was truly struggling, she was there to offer me a helping hand. We had been tested and tried, especially by the monster hell-bent on destroying us, but nothing could break our bond. If he couldn’t kill us, he believed destroying our bond would be another way to get to us, but he didn’t realize that instead of dividing us, it actually drew us together.

Even behind bars, he made phone calls that left us wondering, daunting phone calls that kept me awake and wondering throughout the night until I whispered a prayer and finally fell asleep.
