Chapter One:

Do you need anything while I’m at the store, Delilah? There’s no need for both of us to go out.”

The world was on lockdown, so the few trips out involved a great deal of preparation, but the grocery store was just down the block.

I would drop off Deliah’s things at her house on the way home. With my notes app open, I quickly gathered my purse and headed out the door with my list and Deliah’s list. I was thankful for my cell phone.

Grocery shopping is so common that everyone does it, right? We all had to eat despite a pandemic, but I didn’t realize how life-altering a trip to the grocery store could be, and not because of what was inside, but because of what could be outside.

Going through a store that was more than half empty didn’t take long. Why had so much become so hard to find? That wasn’t exactly something I understood. There was no way around cutting my list, and it would soon become apparent that paper towels were the least of my worries.

As I left the store, I began loading the groceries into the trunk, unaware that there was something lurking in the shadows. I was completely unaware of the danger lurking in plain sight.
