Chapter Six:

“He’s in jail now Tracey, and you are getting stronger every day. Your doctors say you can leave the hospital soon. Covid cases are on the rise, so it will probably be safe for you to stay at home.” Deliah reminded me, but I saw the weariness and worry through the masks and face shields of the doctors and nurses. There was a look of exhaustion and fatigue all around.

If I’m honest, I’m more than a little nervous, so much has changed since I’ve been here. I’m getting stronger, but I’m not as strong as I used to be.” Fighting back tears, I sighed, my grief still raw.

You’re not alone, Trace, it’s going to be okay. It’s impossible for me to begin to comprehend what you’re going through, but I can be there for you.” Tracey replied. “You’ll stay with me.”

The idea of staying at my place was appealing, but I knew it would not be ideal. My needs now would be better served by Deliah’s single-story ranch style home with a spacious layout. Honestly, I didn’t want to be alone, especially after weeks spent in isolation in a hospital with FaceTime and doctors and nurses who look like that medical show we used to watch and think could never happen. We were so wrong.

Thank you very much.” I managed. “But I don’t want to burden you.”
