Chapter Ten:

My mind raced with a thousand thoughts, but the fear of what I had heard paralyzed me. An escape, the man could have shot me, how could they not know? My anger, confusion, and fear were overwhelming. Nobody seemed to know the answers I was looking for.

I handed the phone to Deliah, who took the reins. Against all odds, she would be able to find the answers that I was unable to, and she would find the courage that I lacked. She was far stronger than I was at this point in time.

“Whether it’s him or not, you’re going to be okay. This is a safe place for you.” Reassured Deliah.

I wanted to believe her, wanted to believe he couldn’t reach me here, but a trip to the grocery store wasn’t supposed to turn into a life-or-death situation. In that parking lot, I easily could have died if someone hadn’t seen me, the outcome could have been far different.

“I want to believe that, but what if something does happen?” I asked.

“Having been through so much, I understand feeling that way, but we can’t live our lives in what-ifs.” It was a gentle reminder I needed.

I was finally able to calm my fears. As a result, she was able to better explain what she had heard from the Sergeant to me. I was able to calm down once she…
