Chapter Thirteen:

The noise, the fighting outside the door had been bad enough, but the silence was far worse. We didn’t dare go out that door, because it could have been a trap, so we prayed silently for the officer and ourselves. The only sounds we heard were the noises of the night, animals howling in the distance, a light breeze ruffling the leaves on the trees, sounds that once brought comfort brought fear on this night.

My eyes closed as I prayed, wanting to forget for a moment that a monster who had shot me once was standing out on the porch, determined to kill me. After doing enough damage, he had taken my ability to walk away from me, and now he wanted me dead, and would hurt anyone who stood in his way.

The sound of sirens soon interrupted the night noises. Soon, flashing lights filled my sister’s expansive driveway, a welcome sound of someone coming to save us.

Even still, we weren’t daring to speak, or move, as though Deliah’s feet were stuck in place, and my chair’s wheels were stuck in place. Obviously, that wasn’t the case, but it could have been.

I wanted to talk to my sister, but at the moment even that wasn’t safe, instead we sat and stood in the semi darkness of the hallway, silently praying that this would be over soon, that the monster…
