Chapter Thirty Eight:

The phone calls had stopped until one stormy afternoon, when I picked up the phone and heard heavy breathing and then a deep voice warning me. “This isn’t over yet. You are the two that escaped, and I don’t lose.”

Knowing it was him, the monster who stole so much from my mother and father, I was not about to let him steal my peace as well. In an effort not to satisfy him, I said nothing, but I wasn’t able to hang up the phone. Watching him destroy so many lives, I felt frozen by his hatred, even though we had never known him before he took our parents.

Deliah gently grabbed the phone from my hands, and pressed the end call button. I knew that she knew who it was and that she was tired of living in fear too, always afraid he would get out and walk free despite having been convicted of over two dozen murders. My sister and I would likely be the first victims of the next murder by him if he walked free.

“He’s not going to walk free.” Deliah said. “He can’t he has to much blood, to many lives on his hands.”

Nodding, I wanted to believe my sister’s words, wanting to feel safe again, but it wasn’t easy. It was well known that prisoners walked free or eluded capture.
