Chapter Thirty Three:

Life was getting back to normal, or maybe I should say what was becoming our new normal. In addition to my case, Deliah and I would have court dates for both the murder of our parents and my case, but the shock was wearing off, grief was still a part of our day, but we were looking forward to the day. Even if we weren’t facing the things we were facing, some days would be harder than others.

Finally, we weren’t breaking down when we saw the pictures of our parents. Seeing the pictures was healing in a way. Despite healing, the scars remained. Both of our parents had been murdered, and we believed they walked out on us, which was heartbreaking. Since we knew what happened, we could finally let ourselves grieve, let go of the anger we’d been holding on to, because they hadn’t abandoned us, they tried everything they could to protect us.

Things were looking somewhat better, but I always buried the scar, the bullet in my spine, the rod that stabilized it, and the wheelchair that now enabled me to get where I needed to go, were proof of those scars, proof others could see. Yet there was still another pain, the scars that went deep.

Even though Deliah still was in pain and we both were grieving, we were finding joy again, smiling and laughing occasionally again…
