Shadows that Lurk in the Light: Chapter Three
Chapter Three:
My phone was in my hand, I heard what the officer was saying, but I was unable to speak. Naturally, I was pleased that the monster had been caught, a monster that stalked strangers in broad daylight and shot them, altering their lives forever. Something told me that I was not the first to experience this. I was as certain of that as I was of my name. It was clear that he was young, but that did not mean that he was inexperienced with evil.
There was something that compelled me to wonder what could possibly cause a person to act violently, to intentionally destroy the lives of those around them. My first thought was that he probably did not care. The way he had breathed over what he thought was my dead body, and the way he had stared, made me believe that he did not. All I could think was that he might be a serial killer in the making, or perhaps he already was, which made my heart sink.
I was safe in a hospital that had been placed under lockdown due to a global pandemic and was quarantined in order to prevent me from becoming ill. The doctors and nurses were dressed in those gowns that reminded me of the television shows I used to watch. Despite all of this, I was alive and grateful, despite the grief I was experiencing for what had happened to me as well as the fact that I could not see my sister…
