Chapter Twenty Three:

I had spent the previous six and a half years trying to forget about our parents, avoiding the topic at all costs, but I had not taken into account my sister’s pain. In spite of the fact that Deliah had not even graduated when the family left, she somehow graduated with honors, and she went on to college, which took courage. My little sister had built a good life for herself, and I could not be more proud of her. Though I hated that she had to help me, I was grateful that she was able to assist me and grateful that I was becoming stronger each day.

“I do not like talking about the manner in which Mom and Dad left.” My voice was soft. I was being selfish by completely shutting off what had occurred. While I was already on my own when they left, it was still painful. They would never have won parents of the year, but leaving the way they did was something I could never have imagined.”

“Trace, I know it is not easy for you to discuss this subject, so I will not push it at this time, especially with all that you are going through right now.”
