Chapter One:

“Deliah, I need to go to the store; do you need anything while I am there? There is no need for us both to go out.”

The world was on lockdown and the rare trips out caused a great deal of preparation, yet it sounded as if I was traveling hundreds of miles, when actually the grocery store was just down the street. It wasn’t an ordinary time, the world was on lockdown, and the rare trips out required a great deal of planning.

I checked and rechecked everything I needed, masks, Lysol, hand sanitizer, grabbed my purse, and headed out the door with my list and Deliah’s list, on my notes app. I was thankful for my cell phone. I would drop Deliah’s Stuff off at her apartment on my way home. She had moved into her own apartment just a couple of years before the Pandemic began.

The act of grocery shopping was so ordinary that everyone had to do it, right? Despite a pandemic, we all had to eat, but I had no idea how life altering a trip to the grocery store could be, and it wasn’t because of what was inside, but what could be outside.

It didn’t take long to go through a store that was more than half empty anyway. Why had so much become so hard to come by? That wasn’t exactly something I could understand. My wishes would have to be delayed by half, but that was…
