Prologue:

The room was filled with the heavy footsteps of Deliah as she entered. Her expression indicated that the news was not good. In the last two years, the sound of the phone ringing has either brought terror or joy.

There have been many hard lessons learned over the past couple of years, the most important being that shadows often lurk in the light. As I went to the grocery store during a world-wide pandemic, I nearly died. Not because I got sick, but because a crazed monster shot me in the parking lot.

Delilah sighed. “He has been released.” Delilah sighed. “Due to a technicality.”

As I listened, I became quiet, unable to comprehend what I was hearing. He had shot me, tried to kill me, and left me to die. My life had changed forever, but I had survived, he didn’t know that until I was in the hospital.

I was hit hard by the reality of what had happened. The man who attempted to kill me, this stranger who already knew my face, was now free to murder again.

Tracey, it will all be alright.” Delilah tried to reassure me, but I had to live with what that person had done to me. I always would. “We will leave if necessary to make sure you are safe.”
