She Spelled History Out In the Stories She Told

I was eight or nine
She was in her Eighties
A sweet lady
Needing someone
To tell her tales
Too,
Tales of long ago
And I was an excited
Listener.
She spelled hopes
Dreams and heartbreaks
In after school visits,
And Sunday Morning Masses.
She was a friend
Of the family
And as a little
Girl
I knew the
Importance
Of living history,
Listening to long ago
Tales that
Left me wide eyed
So listening
To Miss Alice
Was a gift,
A gift
I know now
Went both
Ways.
