The Impact of A Song

In 1985 The Judds released Grandpa Tell Me About the Good Ole Days, another song with a great impact. My Grandfather died mere weeks before I turned nine. I have memories of him, vague memories, but the stories I longed to hear were the ones Nonna told me. After my Grandfather died I learned to appreciate the stories of my families history.

Nonna is the reason I became a storyteller. Yet it is her stories I have the hardest time telling because in some ways it feels like I am releasing a secret. A secret often told on rainy nights, sitting cross legged on the red rug with the cinder spots.

Of course the good ole days were not always so good and kind. Nonna waited until I was older, but in times she would tell me the harder stories, the ones of loss and pain. Stories that I knew took courage to share.

I was blessed to have Nonna in my life until a couple of weeks before my twenty sixth birthday. A gift I do not take for granted, it was her stories and her encouragement that gave me the courage to share my own.
