Let me preface by saying this is not my poem, but was included in Mountains to Climb a book my late co-author and I put out a couple of years ago, sadly we lost her in February of 2023, her twin sister is still living as far as I know but has fallen off grid.

The 1

when i became disabled, i

lost everything that mattered —

but the 1 thing i miss the most?

me.

the 1 who used to smile, the 1

who used to laugh, the 1 who lived,

loved and who was loved in return -

that was then.

now i’m the 1 who is lonely and

sad, the 1 judged by looks, the 1

who doesn’t recognize herself

any more.

THAT 1.

*Our friendship was formed through our shared passion, telling the stories we needed to share, and though I have debated for a year whether or not to share this, I knew I had to.
