The Red Church (St James Episcopalian)
Located in picturesque Sonora California, The Red Church, (St James Episcopalian) formerly Anglican was built in 1859 in the Carpenter Gothic style, its board and batten exterior walls are of California redwood and are painted red. The building and grounds were concencrated in 1870 by the RT Rev Willian Ingraham Kip, the first bishop of the Episcopalian Diosese of California. St James is reported to be the seventh Episcopal Parish as well as the oldest Episcopal building in California. The Red Church is one of California’s historical landmarks.
Saint James took part in the Anglican realignment of the United States leaving the Episcopal Church and adopting the name of St. James Anglican Church, at the time it became part of the Anglican Dioese of San Joaquin and the and of the Anglican Church in North America. Its previous rector was the Rev. Wolfgang E. Krismanits, who died in a car crash, with his wife, on 27 November 2012.
