Home was supposed to be a safe place, until the cobblestone walkway became marked with your blood, until an antisemitic idiot, who knew nothing about who you really were, until the very person who tried to kill you eluded the officers for weeks. I loved this house, but it was truly hard to love something you were truly afraid of.

I wasn’t alone, thank goodness, I couldn’t do this alone, my sister, her husband and daughter were with me and I was thankful for that. I needed to come home despite my fears, because I couldn’t give the man that shot me the power to take my home away from me too.

Give me the strength to face this, give me the courage not to be afraid G-d. You have been so good to me L-rd and I’m thankful.

“Talia, are you sure you are ready to come here, we can go back to my place.” Esther said, as she saw me staring at the door. Esther’s husband had built a ramp to allow me easy access, but that wasn’t what holds me back.

“I need to do this Esther.”

“But you don’t need to do it now.” Esther said , gently.

I nodded. “I need my laptop, and my camera.” I said, realizing that I wasn’t ready to be here, that I couldn’t do any of it.

“I’ll help you back into the car, and I’ll go get them for you.” Esther said gently.
